Quantum Materials Spectroscopy Centre (QMSC)

QMSC title card

The Quantum Materials Spectroscopy Centre (QMSC) at the Canadian Light Source is a bespoke beamline facility for angle-resolved and spin-resolved photoemission studies of quantum materials. The beamline uses a unique dual-undulator source, with both undulators elliptically polarizing, allowing arbitrary light polarization and covering a combined photon-energy range of 15 to 1200 eV for two dedicated endstations. This architecture is designed to provide high-flux, polarization-controlled spectroscopy of the low-energy electronic structure of both bulk crystals and thin-film materials.

The ARPES endstation is online and accepting proposals. It is equipped with a high-resolution Scienta-Omicron R4000 electron analyzer and operates over 15 to 1200 eV with flux of 10¹² to 10¹³ photons/s, a 20 μm × 100 μm beam spot, resolving power greater than 10,000 across the full energy range, and sample temperatures from 9 to 320 K. Available polarization modes include horizontal, vertical, and left- and right-circular polarization.

The Spin+ARPES endstation, currently in commissioning, uses a Scienta-Omicron DA30 analyzer and is designed for spin-resolved measurements in the 200 to 1200 eV range with comparable flux.
